Metal rusts, fabric molds ,plastic gets eaten by small creatures, kitchens are small and have very little work space and room for storage.
Not something that we are complaining about, just stating the facts.
As a result, we are a lot more choosy about what things we keep and look for multi-purpose tools.
Things like a pie pan fall under the category of luxury items as it just doesn't get enough use to justify owning it. So, in our house, pies are made in square pans, rice is cooked in a pressure cooker and our computer seconds very well as a t.v. for family movie night.

Truth be told, we forget to miss so many of the fancy gadgets that we use to have in Canada, yet our local friends here would still see us as pretty fancy.
The reality of becoming relevant and useful in a new context is that it is a process and it takes time.
